Finally getting it together to file my parents 2009, 2010 and final estate tax returns. I filed extensions in April. Because I was super busy with work and mostly because it was too overwhelming in so many ways.
My dad had his finances together. Kept everything in Quicken. I just spent the last hour going over his 2009 and 2010 Quicken records. Everything was there. More than 50% of his 2009 income was medical expenses. And he had super great health coverage.
His last year he lived a simple life. He went to Starbucks, he visited my mom. He went out to eat at a few local places sometimes with me, sometimes with my sister and sometimes alone. He went to the Y to help out. He belonged to his ham radio club.
Looking at the entries for restaurants I remember the meals I ate with him. Poquito Mas on Ventura, Islands at the Vons shopping center and sometimes La Salsa in Calabasas. Once we went to the rib joint on Topanga and ate outside on the patio on a warm summer night.
It was a hard year. A good year. I enjoyed my time with him. And now he is gone, she is gone. And I am getting older.
Tomorrow I am going to my accountant, the one my mom worked for in the 80's. The one I have been going to forever. I will drive by all my old haunts. I will remember and I am sure I will cry. I haven't driven back there really since we sold the house. I have mixed feelings.
I am still processing and still sad.
